Volunteering is one of the easiest ways to become involved in the arts, and The Art League provides a fun, relaxing, and welcoming place to do so! Since The Art League’s inception, volunteering has been a mainstay of the organization, and we welcome you to browse the volunteer and internship opportunities below and join The Art League community. Gallery
All of The Art League’s artist members in the Gallery provide volunteer support, volunteering a total of almost 1,800 hours per year! There are many activities for those willing to donate their time and expertise. Hanging shows, painting walls, providing hospitality services at receptions and show openings, bulk mailings, catalog and brochure distribution, computer work, telephone calling, gallery receiving, framing and matting, assisting with special events, and even carpentry are some of the areas where The Art League volunteers make all the difference in the Gallery.
For more information on volunteer opportunities in the Gallery, please call 703.683.1780 or e-mail gallery@theartleague.org
Administrative The Art League’s administrative offices depend on the generosity of volunteers to assist with mailings, computer work, special projects, and more. We often are seeking volunteers to represent The Art League at one-off events or offsite exhibits. Board service is another opportunity through which you can contribute significantly to The Art League’s success. To learn more about such opportunities, contact 703.549.5450 or admin@theartleague.org.
Development
The Art League’s Development Committee is comprised of both members of the Board of Directors and non-Board volunteers from our student body, gallery membership program, and the community. If you have experience or expertise in fundraising and development or are interested in learning more about the Development Committee’s role and functions, please contact the Development Office at the number or e-mail address above.
Internships
Internships are also available in the School to help with Summer Art Camp. Each year, we look for creative high school and college students to help run the camp program and assist art teachers. For more information, call 703.683.2323.
Outreach
Each summer, we recruit a team of adult, women volunteers to serve as mentors in the Space Of Her Own (SOHO) outreach program serving at-risk, low-income 5th-grade girls from Alexandria. Volunteer mentors are each paired with a participating girl, and together they meet weekly to participate in team building activities, learn life skills lessons, eat a healthy dinner, and participate in an art lesson taught by a professional Art League artist. At the end of the year, mentors renovate their girls’ bedrooms using the artworks created and giving each girl a “space of her own.”
Volunteers must make a one-year commitment to attend SOHO sessions every Thursday evening from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at The Art League’s Duke Street Annex (1 Duke Street). Sessions run from late September through June. Across July and August, girls and mentors participate in community service activities on their own time.
If you are interested in learning more about SOHO or serving as a volunteer mentor, please contact Kate Gelatt at kateg@theartleague.org or 703.519.1741.
SOHO is a joint program of The Art League and the Alexandria Court Service Unit. For more information on SOHO, click here. (hyperlink to the SOHO page)
