Edward Hopper (Self-Portrait)1925–1930, courtesy of the Whitney Museum of American Art

Delve into the life and artistry of American realist painter and printmaker Edward Hopper in the new PBS American Masters documentary Hopper: An American Love Story. Revealing research, including rare archival footage and an ample amount of Hopper’s evocative images, offers insight into his complex life and journey to b fame. Equally compelling is the role artist Josephine Nivison in Hopper’s life. As his model, marketer, muse, and wife, she amplified his career at the sacrifice of her own. To the East Curator Talk

Roderick Turner, Excellence, 1989

Over the past 20 years the popularization of public murals has changed the landscape of major cities and rural neighborhoods on a global scale. To the East is a retrospective exhibition curated by Cory Lee Stowers, Executive Director of DC Murals, that dives into the roots and purpose of the movement. The exhibition presents 40 photographs that feature the work of the artists who created the earliest documented murals on the east side of Washington, DC. The exhibition is on view through February 8 at  Phillips@THEARC, 1801 Mississippi Ave, SE, Washington, DC. Join Stowers and cultural preservationist Kimberly Springle on Saturday, January 27 at from 2–4 p.m. for the conversation To The East: The Rise of Murals East of the River. It takes place at The Phillips Collection, 1600 21st Street, NW, Washington, D.C..

A Delicate Balance | Sculpture

Alice’s Barn by Jo Ellen Walker; Clay, encaustic, and mixed media

Works by nine sculptors comprise A Delicate Balance at Athenaeum Gallery. It explores the idea of achieving equilibrium. Just as we strive for harmony in life, the sculptor balances their conceptual thought or ideation to material realization through careful molding, shaping and juxtaposition of often unlikely materials through to the selection of scale, color and presentation. A Delicate Balance is on view through February 18 when the artis will be in conversation.

Enjoy the weekend!
