September 2024 Wit and Whimsy Exhibit
Get ready for a delightful treat! Our September 2024 member exhibit, Wit and Whimsy, is a playful blend of humor, quirkiness, and lots of fun. It showcases an exciting array of 86 pieces ranging from paintings and sculptures to mixed media, collage, photography, fiber art, and drawings. All these intriguing works were carefully selected by juror Elissa Armstrong, associate professor at the Department of Craft/Material Studies, Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts. Don’t miss this enchanting artistic spectacle!
Co-Creation: Artist/Model/Photographer by Jeff Levine

Jeff Levine, our September Solo Artist, brings you a unique and immersive exhibit: Co-Creation: Artist/Model/Photographer. This exhibit transcends the traditional boundaries of artistry, featuring audio, visual, and installation elements. Levine’s work challenges conventional roles of artist and model, fostering environments where mutual respect and creativity thrive. The better the understanding of the model and her aspirations, the more fruitful the artistic result.

Sixty-seven works on display feature a wide range of media, including painting, photography, mixed media, textiles, origami, pastel, and bronze. The show opens Saturday, October 5, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. with a “meet the artists” reception; 700-B West Broad Street, Falls Church, Virginia.
Group 93 Jamming: Art & Music
Art and music have always been fast friends. In the early twentieth century, artists interested in color as form found connections in music theory. The artworks chosen for Group 93 Jamming: Art & Music, at Katzen Arts Center at American University, call to mind sounds, rhythms, and tunes through color, movement, compositional elements, imagery, participation, and even silence. Viewers can imagine their own tunes and hear original musical impressions of the works by members of the AU Department of Performing Arts’ Music Program. Many can be accessed through the magic of QR codes. Sound can also be visual. The ambient “music” floating through the rotunda can be seen in a continuously shifting electronic display. Group 93 was formed in 1990 to explore a critique method developed by artist and AU Professor Emeritus Luciano Penay. The artists include AU alumni, professors emeriti, and artists with deep connections to AU and DC’s art culture; 4400 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Washington, D.C.
Something Left Behind: Selections from the Studio of Michael B. Platt
Something Left Behind: Selections from the Studio of Michael B. Platt, at Brentwood Arts Exchange, presents a collection of work that explores the everyday lives of marginalized communities with insatiable curiosity. Michael B. Platt, long known as a printmaker, preferred to describe himself as an “imagemaker.” His work spans various genres, grappling with the complexities of history and humanity in ways that provoke deep self-reflection. Platt passed away shortly after installing his final exhibition at American University’s Katzen Center in 2019 at the age of 70. He and his wife of 27 years, poet Carol Beane, co-created several projects and collectively impacted the lives of many in the DC metro area. In collaboration with Beane, this exhibit shares both seen and unseen works of Platt, preserving the significance of his art and legacy. Join Brentwood Art Exchange for a curator talk with Gia Harewood Saturday, October 12, from 2–4 p.m.; 3901 Rhode Island Avenue, Brentwood, Maryland.
Enjoy the weekend!
