October 2024 Open Exhibit
The Art League’s open exhibits are a creative free-for-all, welcoming all themes, processes, media, and content. This October, we’re thrilled to showcase 76 diverse pieces spanning painting, sculpture, glasswork, drawing, mixed media, collage, printmaking, digital art, and photography. It’s a vibrant celebration of artistic expression you won’t want to miss! Artist and educator Nick Serratore juried this month’s exhibit.
Missed Representations by Juliette Manolié
Painter Juliette Manolié presents her solo exhibit Missed Representations, a show featuring abstract paintings about complexity, contradiction, and ambiguity. Shapes from the natural world emerge from her work, with both human and animal-like features. Manolié describes her pieces as “deliberately hard to read, but not impossible. When viewing my work, color and movement strike first, then symbology provides familiarity. I use visceral gestures such as gouging, scratching, and pouring ink to create these mysterious figures where elements of the female body are partial, contorted, or otherwise misrepresented.”
Gallery 75: September – October
Come and explore Gallery 75, our vibrant art hub nestled right here in our main gallery. It’s a treasure trove where you can find a range of affordable, extraordinary artwork created by our talented local member artists. Whether in the market for framed, unframed, or even three-dimensional pieces, you’ll find a wealth of pieces waiting for you to take home and display.
Fabrications
Join Willow Street Gallery for Fabrications, a curation of works by a diverse group of DC Arts Studios member-artists and alums: Susannah Brown, Jacqueline Bryant Campbell, Naima Dozier, Dominie Nash, Mary Tran, Charlene Gaddy Wallace, and Cherkita Williams. This exhibit highlights the unique ability of fiber-based art to tell stories and evoke emotions. Each artwork reflects the artist’s personal journey, cultural heritage, and innovative vision. From quilting and crochet, to contemporary mixed-media works and fashion, Fabrications is a celebration of craftsmanship, imagination, and the connections we share through fiber. It opens Friday, October 18, with a reception from 7:30–9 p.m., an is on view through November 3. Come for the artists talk Sunday, October 27, from 2–4 p.m.; 6925 Willow Street, NW, Washington, D.C.
Ceppetelli & Malone: The Back Pages
Foundry Gallery presents The Back Pages, the Washington DC-based collaborative painting duo of Kurtis Ceppetelli and Matt Malone’s fourth exhibition with the gallery. The show will exhibit never-before-seen work spanning 14 years, culminating with a silent auction of their newest painting, The Eulogy. The artists paint on drop cloth canvas using charcoal and a collection of salvaged latex house paint they refer to as an “orphanage of color.” Like jazz musicians, at times they work simultaneously, while at others one will step back and observe until inspired to act again. This unspoken dialogue results in intriguing compositions with multiple layers of meaning. Broken lines combine with loose painting to strike a balance between figurative and abstract elements. The Back Pages is on view through October 27, with a closing reception from 4-6 p.m.; 2118 8th Street NW, Washington, D.C.
FLORA: A Celebration of Nature, Beauty & Life by Marcie Wolf-Hubbard
The Park View Gallery at Glen Echo Park presents FLORA— A Celebration of Nature, Beauty & Life, a solo exhibition by artist Marcie Wolf-Hubbard. This exhibition features a collection of paintings and sculpture in encaustic and mixed media and is dedicated to the artist’s late Aunt Flora. Wolf-Hubbard states, “My Aunt Flora was a huge supporter of me, my family, and my art. She displayed my art proudly in her beautiful home, was my patron, and attended many of my art receptions.…The exhibit is a celebration. Aunt Flora touched so many people’s lives.”; FLORA is on view through November 3; 7300 MacArthur Blvd., Glen Echo, M.D.
Enjoy the weekend!
