The Language of Flowers by Ali Wunder

Zinnias for Remembering by Ali Wunder; Mixed media

Mixed media artist Ali Wunder breathes fresh life into florals with her captivating solo show, The Language of Flowers. Her works are anything but garden-variety still-lifes; each bloom, blossom, and bud is reimagined through a mesmerizing fusion of paint, embroidery, and collage. With every season, she conjures bouquets that are as enchanting as they are unique—a vivid celebration of nature’s beauty, told in textures and hues that speak volumes. The Language of Flowers is on view through January 5.

Multiple Exposures Gallery presents Capital Perspectives, a fine art photography exhibition juried by Exposed DC Executive Director Noe Todorovich. The exhibition extends far beyond familiar postcard scenes and landmarks to present what Todorovich describes as “modern-day life in our capital as seen by the people who live, work, and love here.” Celebrate the season with Multiple Exposures Gallery on Saturday, December 14, for a festive afternoon featuring light refreshments, and holiday cheer from 2–4 p.m. Capital Perspectives runs through Jan 5, 2025; Torpedo Factory Art Center,  Studio #312, 105 North Union Street, Alexandria, Virginia.

Neville Barbour: Blessings in the Gray

Pearls Before, charcoal and graphite, 16.5” x 23”. Courtesy of Neville Barbour & Touchstone Gallery

In Blessings in the Gray, at Touchstone Gallery, Neville Barbour reflects on his feelings of uncertainty while growing up in a rapidly gentrifying DC. Using charcoal and mixed media portraiture, he explores how this ambivalence affected his experiences with race, religion, and gender. Blessings in the Gray is an attempt to process these moments. Blessing in the Gray is on view through January 4; 901 New York Ave NW, Washington D.C.

Vibrant Matter: Works from Wood

Steve Prince, Blue Notes, woodblock
Vibrant Matter: Works from Wood, at McLean Project for the Arts, features a variety of printmaking techniques that explore the effect of material within creative practices. Pulling impressions from wood, the artists in the exhibit examine political theorist Jane Bennet’s theory of “vital materialism”: that matter itself, even inanimate objects, hold life and are active participants in the printing process. Featured artists include: Catherine Cole, Cheryl Edwards, Helen Frederick, Jake Lahah, Jun Lee, Ursula W Minervini, Jonathon Poliszuk, Steve Prince, Pat Sargent, and Priscilla Young. Vibrant Matter is on view through January 4;1234 Ingleside Avenue, McLean, Virginia.

Enjoy the weekend!
