Sumi-E: East Asian Brush Painting Supply List, with Mark Malecki
For beginning students:
The minimum basic requirements:
Medium Orchid Bamboo Brush #H2c
(Please do not get a cheap bamboo brush, as it is not worth the savings!)
Ink stone
Ink stick
Felt Square (one yard)
Paper Practice Roll (18” X 600”)
Additional useful items:
Plastic water bowl – 3 sectioned
Brush rest
Paper weight (Bunchin)
Colors (to be used in the latter half of beginning course, see below)
Water spray bottle
Brush roll for transporting brushes

Colors:
Chinese Watercolors sold under the trade name “Marie’s Easyou” or the
equivalent or “Yasutomo Authentic Chinese Watercolors” or Japanese pan
“gansai” sets Kuritake Tambi, or Kissho Gansai. These are sold in sets and the
student will want the set of twelve at least. The bigger sets are not required.
Chinese Chip colors and Western-style tube watercolors such as Daniel Smith
are acceptable for use while learning.
A kit of supplies is available for purchase online through The Art League’s website, and can be shipped for a fee, or picked up in store.
The kit includes the underlined items.
